dc.description.abstract“Dowry Agreements” (Proikosymfona) drawn up in the Greek Community of Thessaloniki in the Ottoman Empire and went awry for various reasons, were agreements that determined the dowry that the bride would give to the groom. Many times they became the subject of disputes, directly or indirectly, between the couple or other persons connected with them, jeopardizing marriages that had already taken place or even canceling marriages that were to take place. Ottoman state administration had no involvement in the management of affairs such as the dowry agreements of the Greeks. Taking for granted the validity of a quasi-autonomous system of self-government (“Millet”) of the Greek Community in the Ottoman Empire, various aspects of marriage as a social event are reflected in this paper. Specifically, the objective meaning of the dowry that the woman gave to the man is enlightened and, by extension, our knowledge of the position of the Ottoman Greek woman in society vis-à-vis the man is also enlightened. In this study, the above issues were addressed.
