The Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) is a phenomenon that can alter the free field ground motion significantly, hence is required to be considered in structural design, especially in the design of those founded on soft soil. The SSI can be incorporated into the dynamic analysis of structures through the implementation of foundation impedance functions, which provide displacements and/or rotations of the soil-foundation system in terms of unit forces and/or moments applied at the foundation level. As the impedance functions are frequency-dependent, available commercial finite element softwares relying on the time-domain framework encounters difficulties in implementation of them. This paper presents discrete time-domain filters for the frequency-dependent foundation impedance functions associated with selected type of foundation system varying in terms of its geometry, embedment depth, and surrounding soil. The proposed procedure, in which the foundation impedance functions act like filters that are capable of converting the free field ground motions to the motion of the soil-foundation system, provides an ease to incorporate SSI in the time-domain dynamic analysis of structures. An example application is presented to highlight the effects of SSI on both the response spectra and structural response for the selected foundation type. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
