Azo dyes, which are synthetic dyes, are used commonly in many industries such as textile, paper, leather, and cosmetics. Azo dyes are the most widely used ones among the all dyes in various industries and constitute more than 60% of the total dyes used. However, the conventional biological treatment processes are not sufficient to degrade many of these dyes. Besides the other dye treatment methods, enzymatic biodegradation is a promising method for azo dye removal, and laccase, a multicopper oxidoreductase enzyme, which is commonly found in plants and fungi, can be used for this aim. Furthermore, dye decolorization with enzyme biodegradation is gaining importance as a more economical and environmentally cleaner technology compared with the other dye removal technologies. Operational factors such as carbon and nitrogen source, pH, temperature, enzyme type, and concentration are important to achieve high azo dye decolorization efficiency with laccase enzyme. In this study, after giving some basic knowledge related to the azo dyes and laccase enzymes, enzymatic degradation mechanism of azo dyes using laccase was explained on the basis of previous studies present in the literature. Besides, information about the factors (pH, temperature, enzyme type, carbon and nitrogen sources, mediators, metals, dye structure, etc.) affecting the removal of azo dyes with laccase was provided. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
