Özet

As a result of globalization, the idea of identity has changed profoundly, particularly in the field of economics, moving from individualism to a shared, universal identity. This chapter explores the emerging area of identity economics, which questions conventional economic theories by allowing people to consider identity in all of its facets while making decisions. Identity economics is the study of how people make decisions about their finances that are consistent with their social identities, such as their gender, colour, or religion, in addition to their best interests as rational agents. George A. Akerlof and Rachel E. Kranton’s “Economics and Identity” (2000) is a seminal work in this field that highlights the incorporation of identity into economic research. According to this groundbreaking study, identity is connected to several social categories and has a major impact on economic outcomes. The chapter offers perspectives on poverty, social exclusion, gender discrimination, and household work division while arguing that the inclusion of identity in economic models modifies the findings reached by conventional economic theories. The first part of this research defines economic identity conceptually and examines models that clarify how it affects personal economic choices. It makes its way through the development of the idea of identity throughout history, highlighting its importance in a range of societal contexts, from the political and economic to the cultural and social. After that, the study examines psychological viewpoints on identity, emphasizing the functions of social and personal identity in the larger scheme of things. In addition, the study looks at identity determinants, clarifying how identity is complex and shaped by biological, family, cultural, and environmental variables. It highlights how these factors interact dynamically and highlights how people constantly negotiate their identities throughout their lives. The investigation of economic identity and how it affects social categorization and human behaviour is the core of the study. The study is split into models based on choices and models based on beliefs. It examines social interactions, internal group identity selection, and rules and norms about social categories. The elements of identity economics, including social categories and norms, identity utility, divergence from conformity, and conformance, are also introduced in the chapter. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Meral Uzunöz Altan, Meltem Ince Yenilmez, Oguzhan Altinkoz and Sinem Bağçe; individual chapters, the contributors.
