Özet
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a global chaos in such dimensions to affect political and economic stability in many countries. Uruguay is one of these countries. This compilation seeks to describe the healthcare system in Uruguay and summarize practices and experiences in the process of pandemic which is still going on. Already having her turbulent political past, the healthcare system in Uruguay is affected by the process. Today Uruguay is one of the high-income group countries in the world with her regime as representative democracy. Following the elections of 2004, health reforms were given start in 2005 to guarantee the provision of comprehensive health services to population on the basis of the principle of right to health. Change and transformation taking place with these reforms relatively eased the burden of managing the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, it is observed that cases have been rapidly increasing since December 2020 with accompanying heavy social and economic costs. The situation is explained by such causes as economic concerns that affect many decisions in pandemic management and resultant defects in decision-making on scientific grounds, failure in adopting some structural measures and delays in vaccination. The impact of the pandemic still persists despite decreases in the number of active cases and disease-related deaths. © 2022, Turkish Medical Association. All rights reserved.
