DOKSANÜÇ HARBİ’NİN KAYNAKLARINDAN İNGİLİZ GAZETELERİ

Abstract

II. Abdülhamit döneminde, Nisan 1877’de başlayarak Ocak 1878’de sona eren, Doksanüç Harbi olarak da bilinen ve Osmanlı Devleti ile Rus Çarlığı arasında yaşanan savaş yaklaşık olarak dokuz ay kadar sürmüş ve Osmanlı Devleti’nin mağlubiyeti ile sonuçlanmıştır. Bu savaş hakkında müracaat edilebilecek çok sayıda kaynak bulunmakta ve bunların her birisi kaynak değeri açısından ayrı ayrı kritiğe tâbi tutulabilir. Çalışmamızda, Doksanüç Harbi’ni günü gününe sayfalarına aktarmaya çalışmış olan İngiliz gazetelerini kullandık. Savaşta tarafsızlığını ilan etmiş olan bir devletin basın organı olan bu gazeteler, Doksanüç Harbi’ni günlük takip ederek gelişmeleri okuyucularına duyurmaya çalışmışlardır. Gazeteler, cephelerdeki komuta merkezlerinin hazırladığı raporlardan muhabirlerden gelen telgraflara kadar birçok kaynağı kullanmışlar ve sundukları haberlerin kaynaklarını belirtmişlerdir. İncelemiş olduğumuz on altı gazete, sadece cephede ordular arasında geçenleri haberleştirmemiş, savaşan tarafların başka devletlerle ilişkilerinden savaş bölgelerindeki önemli yerleşim yerlerinin tanıtılmasına ve komutanların hayat hikâyelerine kadar birçok konuya yer vermişlerdir. Savaş haberlerine ayırdıkları sayfalarında tüm cephelerdeki gelişmeleri bölümler halinde sunmuşlardır. Böylece okuyucularına savaş coğrafyasının tümünü görme imkânı sunmuşlardır. Osmanlı Devleti ile Rus Çarlığı arasında yaşanmış olan bu savaşın değişik yönleri hakkında sayfalarına çok teferruatlı bilgiler aktarmış olan İngiliz gazeteleri kaynak olarak Doksanüç Harbi’nin anlaşılmasına katkı sağlamışlar ve tarafsız bir devletin basınının savaşa yaklaşımını yansıtmışlardır. Fakat İngiltere’nin savaşta tarafsız olması gazetecilerin de tarafsız olmasını garanti edemeyeceğinden, gazetelerin mutlak manada tarafsız olduğunu iddia etmek zordur.

During the period of Abdul Hamid II, the '93 War, also known as the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire, lasted for approximately nine months, started in April 1877 and ended in January 1878 with the defeat of the Ottoman Empire. The accessible sources about this war are very vast and, each and every one of these sources’ value can be separately criticized. In our study, we used the English newspapers as the sources of the '93 War. These newspapers, which were the press organs of the state that proclaimed its neutrality in the war, tried to follow the '93 War on a daily basis in order to present it to its readers. The newspapers used various sources such as reports of the command center at the very front and telegrams from reporters, which are also indicated as sources for their present news. The sixteen newspapers we have been analyzed were not only about the things happening between the armies at the front, but also about lot of topics such as the relations of warring parties with other states, the introduction of major settlements in the region and the stories of commanders. On the pages dedicated to war news were about all the developments at the front and were divided into parts. Therefore, the readers had the chance to witness the whole geography of the war. The English newspapers, which transferred very detailed news about different faces of the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire, became sources for the understanding of the '93 War and reflected the approach of a neutral state towards the war. But the fact that England was neutral didn't make the writers of the newspapers neutral, too. That is why it is hard to say that the newspapers are neutral in absolute terms.
