Natural gas, petroleum and such other sources of fossil energy are most commonly used around the world. Sources of fossil energy bring along important problems in the atmosphere such as greenhouse gases. The use of environmentally friendly sources of zero energy without any carbon emission must be increased instead of fossil fuels. No carbon emission is observed in the atmosphere with the utilization of sun as the major source of zero energy. The hot water obtained from the solar energy and solar collectors was used in heating the soil in greenhouses in autumn and winter. Significant fertility improvements were observed for the parcels of the greenhouses where the soil was heated and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. crispa) was grown. In the first year of the trial (2016), the fertility of lettuce plants varied between 33.76 and 17.42 g dry weight" 1 and the highest fertility was achieved for the parcel which had a hot water pipeline. In the second year, the fertility varied between 16.01-6.40 g dry weight" 1 and was 51-63% less than the first year. The major reason of this decrease resulted from the fact that the soil temperature in 2016 was about 10 °C higher than 2017. The second reason of the decrease in the fertility was the assumption that the soil exhaustion due to the failure of taking sufficient precautions for hotbeds. The increase in the soil temperature affected the intake of some nutrient elements both positively and negatively. © 2020 Parlar Scientific Publications. All rights reserved.en_US
