Tüm dünyada her alanda başlayan yenilik hareketi Osmanlı devletinde de kendini göstermiştir. Başlangıçta askeri ve idari alanlarda görülen yenilikler zamanla yerini bayındırlık alanında göstermeye başlamıştır 19. yüzyıl’da Avrupa’da ulaştırma alanındaki yenilikler Osmanlı imparatorluğunda da görülmüştür. Ulaşımdaki hızlı gelişme Osmanlı İstanbul’unda şehir içi ulaşımda kendisini göstermiştir.Osmanlı devletinde başlayan batılılaşma hareketi İstanbul’da şehirleşme de kendisini göstermiştir. İstanbul’daki yapılaşmanın değişmesine neden olmuştur. Bu sebeple şehir içi ulaşımda daha önce kullanılan araba ve omnibüsler İstanbul halkına büyük kolaylık sağlamıştı. İstanbul halkı yaya olarak ulaşım sağlamaktan kurtulmuştu. Ancak nüfusta meydana gelen artış ve araçların yol güzergahının düzgün olmaması sebebi ile ulaşımda aksamalar meydana geliyordu.Atlı tramvayla başlayan ulaşımda yenilik hareketi kısa sürede İstanbul halkında yaygın kabul ve destek gördü.. Atlı tramvay yolarlın bozukluğu ve tramvayları çeken atların hızı düşmesi sebebiyle kısa sürede gördüğü ilgi azalmıştı.During the 19th century, the world began to experience a rapid transformation under the influence of steam power, compared to the previous periods. That transformation was also observed on the Ottoman Empire territories. Structural changes were observed especially in İstanbul, which was the heart of the Ottoman Empire and also the center of economic and social life during the 19th century. Changes were made between the regions in İstanbul according to the needs of the city. One of the most important changes was undoubtedly the novelties in transportation. The most important novelty in the transportation of İstanbul was the Trolley transportation. The first enterprise in the trolley transportation was started with construction works of rider trolley in İstanbul and its surroundings in 1864. Rapid urbanization in İstanbul caused an increase in the city population. Increase in the number of passengers created the need for using a new power in transportation, which used to be provided with animal power. The new trolley line paved the way for transporting many passengers with lower costs.
