İnsanoğlu varoluşundan beri sağlık arayışları içerisine girmiş ve sağlık için çeşitli tedavi yöntemlerini denemiştir. Bitkisel esansiyel yağlar da sağlık problemlerini çözmek ve yaşam kalitesini geliştirmek için kullanılmaktadır. Aromaterapinin hemşirelik bakımında kullanımı Florence Nightingale’e kadar uzanır. Hemşirelik bakımında uzun bir geçmişe sahip olan aromaterapi; hemşirelerin hasta bakımlarını geliştirmek ve hemşireliği güçlendirmek için kullanabilecekleri yöntemlerden birisidir. Hasta bakımında holistik yaklaşımı benimseyen hemşirelerin bunu başarabilmeleri için öncelikle yeterli bilgi ve beceriye sahip olması gereklidir. Bu nedenle, aromaterapi ve kullanım alanları hakkında bilgi hemşirelik müfredatlarına dahil edilmelidir. Ayrıca hemşirelerin hizmet içi eğitim, kongre ve sempozyumlar yoluyla da bu bilgilerinin güncelleştirilmesi gereklidir.Aromatherapy is defined as use for their therapeutic effects of essential oils which are extracted from herbal sources. Since the existence of human beings entered into the search for health and tested various treatments for health.
