The Socio-Economic Structure of Fishery Activities and Seafood Marketing in Marmara Sea: A Case Study Along the Coastal Area of Tekirdag Province

Özet
Marmara Sea, which has a typical inside sea characteristics, is placed all along the Turkish borders. Because of both intensive level of population living around and many industrial plants has been taken place at this area which has continuously environmental pollution. In addition to, intensive sea traffic due to tankers carrying petroleum and etc., have been causing this pollution to higher level. Since, the all negative factors mentioned above, incredible amount of fish spices (118 different spices belonging to 10 taxonomic groups) were observed still alive in the Marmara Sea (Zengin et al., 2004). This situation causes to be gained at a satisfactory level of income for many fishery families and sustainable of their lives. In this study, with the aim of determining the socio-economical structure and figure out its marketing system in Tekirdag; 263 vessels, used in the centre of province and in towns and villages on the shore, were put into an order according to their lengths and by taking their densities into consideration; they were classified into three groups as the boats of vessels 5-10 m, 10-15 m and the ones bigger than 15 m. A survey of 54 vessels, 31 of which are from small group, 18 from medium group and five from the large group has been conducted by 'The stratified Random Sampling Method'. 'Technical specialities of the vessels which were surveyed, specialities of the supporting vessels, net properties, fishing equipment, socio-economical conditions of boat owners and the crew, present problems and proposals for the solution of the problems have been studied. At the conclusion of the survey evaluation, it has been observed that the vessel owners don't show any socio-economical differences in respect of the size of their vessels and such problems as not having the social security, nonexistance of the Ministry of Maritime, high cost of fishing equipments, insufficiency of the inspections, underdevoloped marketing system and excessive fishing have been found out the higher levels.
