Öğe Plant Extracts; a New Rumen Moderator in Ruminant Diets(Namık Kemal Üniversitesi, Ziraat Fakültesi, 2007) Tekeli, Ahmet; Kutlu, Hasan Rüştü; Çelik, LadineSince the use of antibiotics in animal feeds has been banned, researches on alternative natural products that modulate ruminal fermentation have been intensified. Natural compounds such as plant extracts have been considered to be replace antibiotics as safe and sustainable alternatives. Plant extracts in the rumen form complexes with dietary proteins and thus protect them from microbial fermentation. Plant extracts, especially including saponins, have strong antiprotozoal activity. The elimination of protozoa from the rumen provides some benefits to overcome the loss of available protein. Plant extracts also have appetizing properties, which promotes greater feed intake, better performance and secretion of endogenous enzymes and digestive juices, leading to improve nutrient digestibility. Plant extracts have also potential to provide ammonia control and nitrogen binding activity; which contributes to form cleaner and healthier environment.
