While only 4 species are distributed in northern Anatolia where Black Sea climate prevails, 14 species are found throughout southern and western Anatolia where the Mediterranean climate is dominant. However, no cave crickets were reported from the middle and eastern Anatolia where the continental climate is present. There is no data-based study on the distribution pattern of cave cricket species in Anatolia. This study aimed to reveal any possible relation between climatic conditions and distribution of cave crickets in three caves selected as representatives for three climate types present in Anatolia. Temperature and relative humidity in the ecological zones of the given caves and the surface were periodically measured by using data loggers. We found a new species of the genus Dolichopoda Bolivar, 1880, D. rampinii Taylan & Sirin sp. n. from Anatolia (Hatay province). Additionally, some taxonomical notes and new figures of both sexes for D. pusilla Bolivar, 1899 and D. aranea Bolivar, 1899 are given according to syntype specimens. The new species, which is collected from Akbez cave (Turkey, Hatay province). Our data obtained from the type specimens indicates the validation of D. pusilla and D. aranea. Ultimately, some remarkable points of the distribution pattern of the species were presented.Öğe A preliminary research and notes on Orthoptera (Insecta) Fauna of Hakkari Province(Magnolia Press, 2021) Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Şirin, Deniz; Sevgili, Hasan; Yeşilyurt, FatihTo date several studies have been carried out on Orthoptera fauna throughout Anatolia; however, there is no comprehensive study on the Orthoptera fauna of Hakkari Province. This study is a preliminary comprehensive research that deals with the less known Orthoptera (Insecta) fauna of Hakkari Province. In this respect, the records and possible localities were examined between the years 2018-2020 (except Kurdia uvarovi) for the Hakkari Province. Specimens were collected with the help of an insect sweep net or by hand. As a result of the field studies and literature research, it has been determined that the Orthoptera fauna in the province is represented by 51 genera and 69 species/subspecies belonging to 19 subfamilies in 8 families. In the study, 24 new records were noted for Hakkari Orthoptera fauna and Isophya iraca Maran, 1977 (syn. n), which is established as a new synonym of I. hakkarica Karabag, 1962. According to our preliminary research, the Orthoptera fauna of Hakkari includes 32 Ensiferan and 37 Caeliferan members. In the Ensifera suborder (long antennae katydids, crickets and allies), 25 species belonging to the Tettigoniidae, 5 species belonging to Gryllidae, and one species for the each of Myrmecophilidae and Gryllotalpidae families have been identified. Caelifera suborder includes 26 species belonging to the Acrididae, 9 species belonging to the Pamphagidae, and one species for each of the Pyrgomorphidae and Tetrigidae families. During the field studies, it was observed that the Uvarovistia satunini (Uvarov, 1916), Uvarovistia zebra (Uvarov, 1916) and, Bradyporus (Callimenus) latipes (Stål, 1875) species have high population densities. They "swarm" and damage the agricultural areas especially in the Durankaya, Bayköy, Bagisli, and Kirikdag regions. For this reason, it is suggested that the populations of these species should be routinely monitored in agricultural areas. © 2021 Magnolia Press. All rights reserved.Öğe Bioacoustics characterization of some anatolian endemic and sub-endemic Katydids (Orthoptera; Tettigoniidae; Bradyporinae, Phaneropterinae and Tettigoniinae)(Magnolia Press, 2019) Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Mol, Abbas; Sevgili, Hasan; Şirin, DenizSeventeen endemic and time sub-endemic species belonging to three subfamilies of Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera: Bradyporinae, Phaneropterinae and Tettigoniinae) were sampled during field trips throughout different regions of Anatolia between 2015 and 2018 (except one taxon). Acoustic parameters of these 20 bush-cricket species affiliated to 12 genera (Apholidoptera, Bradyporus, Decticus, Eupholidoptera, Parapholidoptera, Pezodrymadusa, Pholidoptera, Polysarcus, Psorodonotus, Squamiana, Uvarovistia and Yalvaciana) have been described for the first time in this study. Bioacoustical analysis shows that male calling songs are species-specific for the genera Bradyporus, Parapholidoptera, Pholidoptera, Apholidoptera, Uvarovistia and Psorodonotus. However, there are no distinct differences among species of the genus Pezodrymadusa. Moreover, our additional data on genus Eupholidoptera indicate that there are some different song patterns within the genus. The song description of Uvarovistia zebra presented here is the second bioacoustics data on this genus. The acoustical analyses data support the morpho-species hypothesis of Psorodonotus suphani Taylan & Sirin, 2014, which is known from Suphan Mountain (Bitlis province, Eastern part of Turkey) and reject Kaya & ciplak (2017), which recommended it as synonym to P. caucasicus (Fischer von Waldheim, 1846) (commonly known as a Black Sea Region species).Öğe Bioacoustics review of Anatolian species of the predatory bush-cricket genus Saga (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Saginae) with the description of a new species(Magnolia Press, 2019) Şirin, Deniz; Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Sevgili, Hasan; Mol, AbbasThe genus Saga is a genus of generally large predatory bush-cricket species. It includes 13 taxa in the Palaearctic region. In this research, eight species belonging to Saga (Tettigoniidae, Saginae) were sampled during field studies in different regions of Anatolia of Turkey between 2010 and 2018 (except one specimen). The bioacoustic parameters of these species recorded during the field or in laboratory conditions and the male calling song descriptions, as well as the oscillographic illustrations and distribution maps are given. A new population of Saga found from the South-Eastern Taurus (Hakkari province), which is affiliated to a new species and shows similarity to S. ephippigera, along with the morphological and bioacoustical descriptions of Saga hakkarica sp. n. Sirin & Taylan from Turkey, are also given. The relationships between the new species and the closest taxa are discussed using morphological and bioacoustical characters. The structural investigations of the male calling songs reveal three different bioacoustic groups affiliated to eight Anatolian Saga species; as (i) Ephippigera group (S. syriaca + (S. ephippigera + Saga hakkarica), (ii) Natoliae group (S. natoliae + (S. beieri + (S. longicaudata + S. puella) and (iii) S. cappadocica. As a result, a total of 117 species-subspecies belonging to 37 genera of the family Tettigoniidae, 6 species belonging to five genera of the family Gryllidae and one species belonging to one genus of the family Gryllotalpidae have been determined from the examined material. Of these species, 67 species are endemic to Turkey, and 12 are harmful to agricultural crops.Öğe Contribution to the knowledge of two endemic species of Anatolian Gomphocerinae Fieber, 1853 (Orthoptera: Acrididae)(Magnolia Press, 2015) Mol, Abbas; Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Şirin, DenizThis study focuses on two endemic Anatolian Gomphocerinae Fieber, 1853 species, which are evaluated in terms of nomenclature and taxonomy using biogeographical, morphological, and acoustical data. The original description of Eremippus zeybekoglui is supplemented by the data on new specimens collected from type locality, and the female of this species is described for the first time in this study. Based on the new specimens of Stenobothrus weidneri (Demirsoy, 1977) comb. nov., which were collected at the type locality, the species is transferred from Eremippus Uvarov, 1926 to Stenobothrus Fischer, 1853. Additionally, male calling songs of both species are described for the first time in this study. Also, the biogeography of these species is presented and discussed.Öğe Description of a New Species of the Genus Troglophilus Krauss, 1879 (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) from Northern Anatolia, Turkey(Gazi Entomological Research Soc, 2015) Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Mol, Abbas; Şirin, DenizIn this paper a new species of cave crickets Troglophilus (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae) from northern Anatolia is described as Troglophilus aspegi Taylan and Sirin sp. nov.. Considering the other already recognised nine species in Anatolia, there are now total 10 species of Troglophilus that currently inhabit the caves and epigean habitats of Turkey. The new species is restricted to National Park of Kure Daglari in Bartin province and known only in one locality (Sipahiler cave). Troglophilus aspegi is morphologically distinguishable from the other nine Troglophilus species present in Turkey due to their small size, male tenth tergite, ovipositor shape, reddish-light brown body color. New species differs from the morphologically closest T tatyanae for body color, tenth tergite and epiphallus shape in male, subgenital plate shape in both sexes, length of the appendages and spinulation of the legs. On the other hand, these new data show that geographical distribution of Troglophilus is not only restricted with north eastern Anatolia but also in caves from north western section of Blacksea Region of Turkey.Öğe First song descriptions of some Anatolian species of Tettigoniidae Krauss, 1902 (Orthoptera, Ensifera)(Pensoft Publishers, 2014) Şirin, Deniz; Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Mol, AbbasFourteen endemic and two sub-endemic species belonging to three subfamilies of Tettigoniidae (Tettigoniinae, Bradyporinae and Saginae) were sampled during field trips throughout the different ranges of Anatolia between the years of 2004 and 2013. Acoustic parameters of these 16 species affiliated to 8 genera (Anterastes, Apholidoptera, Gampsocleis, Parapholidoptera, Pezodrymadusa, Psorodonotus, Bradyporus and Saga) have been described for the first time in this study. Acoustical analysis showed that song characters are species-specific in the genera Saga and Psorodonotus. On the other hand, we could not find big differences among species of the genus Pezodrymadusa and Parapholidoptera castaneoviridis species-group.Öğe Myrmeleotettix Bolivar (Orthoptera, Gomphocerinae) in Anatolia on the basis of morphological and behavioural characters: data suggest a new species from southern end of the Anatolian refugium(Magnolia Press, 2011) Şirin, Deniz; Mol, Abbas; Çıplak, BattalMyrmeleotettix Bolivar, 1914 (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Gomphocerinae) is a genus represented by nine species in the whole Palaearctic. It is poorly known in Anatolia except some records of M. maculatus. As for the other glacial refugia, cold preferring members of this genus are discontinuously distributed on high altitudes in Anatolia. Additionally, morphology is not sufficiently useful in taxonomy of gomphocerinae members for those producing a complicate courtship song. Thus an accurate taxonomy requires extensive materials and different character sources. In this study, the taxonomy of Anatolian Myrmeleotettix is reexamined on the basis of qualitative and morphometric morphology, and male calling and courtship songs. Song and morphology both suggest the existence of two species in Anatolia. The first is M. maculatus (Thunberg) which is distributed along the northern one-third of Anatolia in addition to other parts of West Palaearctic. The second is a new species, Myrmeleotettix ethicus sp. n. possibly endemic to the southwest corner of Anatolia. The new species can be easily distinguished from the most similar species M. maculatus by morphology as well as by song characters. The conclusions are: (i) similarities in courtship and calling songs of these two species may indicate that they are sister species (ii) from habitat preference and distribution patterns it can be inferred that they diverged following a cold period and the new species is a remnant of ancestral population in southern Taurus, and (iii) the new species is a range restricted, vulnerable species as is the case for many other taxa present in the Mediterranean Taurus biodiversity hotspot.Öğe New species and new song record of the genus Dociostaurus Fieber, 1853 (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Gomphocerinae) from Southern Anatolia, Turkey(Magnolia Press, 2013) Şirin, Deniz; Mol, AbbasThe new species Dociostaurus (Kazakia) icconium Sirin & Mol sp. n. (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Gomphocerinae) is described on the basis of morphology and male calling song. The congeneric partner of new species is Dociostaurus (Stauronotulus) cappadocicus (Azam, 1913) whose song description is done for the first time in this study. The species Dociostaurus (Kazakia) brevicollis (Eversmann, 1848) is assumed to be the closest relative of Dociostaurus (Kazakia) icconium sp. n.. The relationships between the new species and the relatives/congeneric partners were evaluated by using both song and morphological characters, for which illustrations were provided. Finally, a brief remark on the distribution pattern of the species was given.Öğe Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis of Myrmeleotettix maculatus (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Gomphocerinae) species group in Anatolia(Magnolia Press, 2021) Şirin, Deniz; Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Bircan, Rifat; Akyıldız, Gürkan; Can, LeventSix Anatolian and one European populations of the Myrmeleotettix maculatus species group, which contains M. maculatus and M. ethicus species, have been studied by using molecular genetics methods with mitochondrial COI gene. Myrmeleotettix ethicus is an Anatolian endemic species with local distribution whereas M. maculatus is distributed in western Palearctic. The phylogenetic analysis (ML and BI analyses) of the M. maculatus species group in Anatolia reveals that it consistently recovered two well-supported main clades and four different lineages. Molecular time estimates suggest that the diversification of the M. maculatus species group took place between the Late Tortonian (around 8-9 My) and the Middle of Pliocene-Pleistocene (around 4.3 My-present) periods and the current distribution of the genetic diversity has been affected by the uplifting of the Central Anatolian plateau, the termination of the Messinian salinity crisis, and the Quaternary climatic changes. However, determining factors in most interactions between ticks and predators have not yet been fully deciphered. We hypothesized that the ant species Lasius alienus, which is unknown whether it has any impact on ticks, may exhibit predation on the eggs of tick species Hyalomma marginatum, H. excavatum, and Rhipicephalus bursa, and that the tick egg wax can be the main determinant in possible predation. In the study, 6300 tick eggs with the natural wax coating (waxed/untreated) and 2700 dewaxed tick eggs, the wax of which was removed in the laboratory, were repeatedly presented to the foraging workers belonging to three different ant nests in their natural habitat. Depending on the tick species and trials, the rate of the eggs carried by the ants ranged from 12.8 to 52.1% in the waxed and from 59.8 to 78.4% in the dewaxed eggs. It was observed that the dewaxing process both increased the interest of the ants in the eggs and resulted in a reduction in the variation associated with tick species. This study showed that L. alienus has a predatory effect on tick eggs, the severity of this impact is closely associated with the tick species, the tick-associated difference is caused by the species-specific property of the egg wax, and the variety in the protective effects of the wax seems to be an evolutional result of the biological and ecological adaptation process of the species.Öğe Review of the Poecilimon (Poecilimon) zonatus species group and description of new species from Turkey with data on bioacoustics and morphology (Orthoptera: Phaneropterinae)(Magnolia Press, 2018) Sevgili, Hasan; Şirin, Deniz; Heller, Klaus Gerhard; Lemonnier Darcemont, MicheleThe aim of this study is to conduct a detailed taxonomic revision of the Poecilimon (Poecilimon) zonatus species-group (Orthoptera: Phaneropterinae) using both morphology and bioacoustics. Two new species (Poecilimon (Poecilimon) salmani, P. (P) azizsancar) and one new subspecies (P. (P) zonatus datca) are described. Based on the data, we conclude that the species complex can be separated into two subgroups (P. tauricola and P. zonatus). Within the P. zonatus subgroup, song structures indicate P. variicercis as basal branch since producing two syllable types is possibly a derived character. From both, from bioacoustics and morphology, it is concluded that the relationships between species of the group are as follows: P. tauricola subgroup (P. tauricola + P. azizsancar) + P. zonatus subgroup (P. variicercis + (P. varicornis + (P. zonatus zonatus + P. zonatus datca)) + (P. salmani + P. vodnensis)))). Except for two species (P. vodnensis and P. varicornis), the other species of the group are all distributed in Anatolia. P. vodnensis is known only from Macedonia, whereas, P. varicornis has been recorded only from Syria and Lebanon. We assume that the group originated from an Anatolian ancestral stock and expanded its distribution to the Balkans through Taurus Way and Dardanelles. Other ancestral populations may have also spread in the north-south directions through the appropriate steppe corridors in the Anatolian Diagonal Mountains and in its vicinity.Öğe Speciation of the genus Dolichopoda in Anatolia with reference to the role of ancient central lake system(Brill Academic Publishers, 2016) Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Şirin, DenizThe aim of this study was to determine of the evolutionary relationships of the Turkish Dolichopoda species, and to define and clarify the systematics of the group in Anatolia. For this purpose, we have examined some 27 populations of the genus Dolichopoda from Anatolia and adjacent regions (Caucasia and the Greek islands). A total of 532 bp of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene was sequenced in order to clarify the phylogenetic relationships of the genus. Five main clades can be distinguished and well-supported by phylogenetic analyses. In these clades, the results obtained from Samos Island and Anatolia are remarkable. In contrast to some previous studies, our results point to an Aegean origin of the Anatolian Dolichopoda species. According to the mitochondrial 16S rDNA divergence data, the current distribution of the genetic diversity was affected by ancient central lake system, habitat types, Messinian period and Plio-Pleistocene characterized by alternating dry/cold and warm/humid stages.Öğe The Gomphocerinae Tarbinsky, 1932 (Orthoptera: Acrididae) fauna of the Turkish Thrace(Magnolia Press, 2017) Şirin, Deniz; Mol, Abbas; Taylan, Mehmet Sait; Demir, Eyüp; Kızılocak, Dilan HevraFifteen taxa belonging to nine genera (Arcyptera, Ramburiellla, Dociostaurus, Notostaurus, Omocestus, Stenobothrus, Euchorthippus, Pseudochorthippus and Chorthippus) of Gomphocerinae (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were sampled during field trips throughout the different ranges of Turkish Thrace between the years of 2010 and 2015. Bioacoustic parameters of these 15 species have been described for the first time from Turkish Thrace with this study. A total of 5 taxa (Arcyptera (Pararcyptera) microptera microptera, Omocestus (Dirshius) petraeus, Stenobothrus eurasius eurasius, Euchorthippus declivus and C. (Glyptobothrus) biguttulus euhedickei) were identified in the Turkish Thrace region as new records. In addition to these, Stenobothrus eurasius eurasius has been given a new record for Turkey.Öğe The Morphological and Behavioral Analysis of Geographically Separated Rammeihippus turcicus (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Gomphocerinae) Populations: Data Result in Taxonomical Conflict(Oxford Univ Press Inc, 2014) Şirin, Deniz; Mol, Abbas; Akyıldız, GürkanRammeihippus Woznessenskij, 1996 (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Gomphocerinae) is a genus represented by two species. Rammeihippus turcicus (Ramme, 1939) is the only known species of the genus from Anatolia. As for most of the Gomphocerinae species in Anatolia, all populations of the species are intermittently distributed at high altitudes. In this study, three populations of Rammeihippus turcicus were studied for the first time to determine the song and mating behavior. Males of the species produce typical calling song for Gomphocerinae and complex courtship songs and mating behavior. Thus, an accurate taxonomy requires extensive material and different character sources. In this study, the Anatolian Rammeihippus was re-examined on the basis of qualitative and morphometric morphology, male songs, and behavioral characteristics. There was no agreement between the results of the song and morphology. Acoustic analysis suggested one species and patchy distribution in the area, whereas morphology pointed out that each population was a different taxonomical unit. The results of the study show that the aberrant morphology does not necessarily indicate a new species in the Gomphocerinae genus.Öğe Türkiye'de dağılım gösteren bazı Caelifera (Insecta: Orthoptera) türlerinin yeni lokalite kayıtları, endemizm, yaygınlık ve tarımsal zarar oluştıurma açısından değerlendirilmesi(2014) Mol, Abbas; Şirin, Deniz; Taylan, Mehmet SaitBu çalışmada, Türkiye'nin farklı bölgelerinden 2000-2013 yılları arasında toplanan, Aksaray Üniversitesi ve Namık Kemal Üniversitesi Entomoloji Müzelerinde muhafaza edilen bazı Caelifera (Orthoptera) türleri yeni lokalite kayıtları, endemizm, yaygınlık ve tarımsal zarar oluşturma açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Bu değerlendirmeler sonucunda, Tridactylidae familyası 1 tür, Tetrigidae familyası 2 cinse ait 2 tür, Pyrgomorphidae familyası 1 cinse ait 2 tür, Pamphagidae familyası 5 cinse ait 14 tür/alttür ve Acrididae familyası için 27 cinse ait 61 tür verilmiştir. Bu türlerden 10'unun bir veya birden çok bölge için, 29'unun bir veya birden fazla il için yeni lokalite kaydı olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca 19'unun Türkiye, 3'ünün Türkiye ve Balkan Yarımadası ve diğer 3'ünün Türkiye ve Kafkasya için endemik olduğu bilinmektedir. Yine literatüre göre bu türlerden 37'si bilinen-yaygın türler olup, 28 türün ise tarımsal ve ekili alanlara zarar verdikleri önceki çalışmalarda rapor edilmiştir
