Geçmişten günümüze Taksim meydanı’ nın İstanbul kent kimliği üzerine etkisinin irdelenmesi

Abstract

Kamusal alanlar, toplumun tüm bireylerince paylaşılan ve erişilebilen, farklı bakış açılarının birlikte var olduğu ve bir araya gelebildiği alanlardır. Bir kentin kamusal alanlarında yer alan tüm mekansal deneyimler ve toplumsal ilişkiler, kentsel kültürün toplumsal üretimini oluşturmaktadır. Kentlerin geçmişlerine dair izler taşıyan kamusal mekanlar toplumsal hafızanın oluşmasını da sağlamaktadır. Bu tez çalışmasının konusunu oluşturan Taksim Meydanı ve yakın çevresinin Cumhuriyet döneminin başlamasıyla birlikte İstanbul'da bölgenin fiziksel çevresi çeşitli müdahaleler geçirmiştir. Kentsel ölçekteki bu müdahaleler oluşturulan ve simge haline getirilen bu mekanların Cumhuriyet kavramının toplumsal hafızada inşa edilmesi için birer araç halini almıştır. Bu doğrultuda geçmişten günümüze Taksim Meydanı ve yakın çevresi, geçirdiği değişimlerle birlikte İstanbul kent kimliğine etkisi önemli olmuştur.

Public spaces are areas where different views can be shared and come together, accessible to all individuals in society. All spatial experiences and social relations in the public spaces of a city constitute the social production of urban cultures. Public spaces bearing traces of the cities' pasts also provide for the formation of social memory. The Taksim square and its immediate surroundings, which constitute the subject of this thesis, have undergone various interventions in the physical environment of the region in Istanbul with the beginning of the Republican era. These interventions in the urban dimension have become a vehicle for the construction of the symbolic concept of the Republic in the social memory. In this direction, the Taksim square and its immediate surroundings, which are the scene of strong zoning activities today, define an urban space that can legitimize the anticipation of cultural and social life foreseen to be reconstructed.
