The Relationship of Evidence-Based Nursing Attitudes of Nurses Working in Surgical Wards With Patient-Centered Care Competencies
Balcı, F.; Yıldız, Tülin; Eti, Aslan, F.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the evidence-based nursing attitudes of nurses working in surgical wards and their patient-centered care competencies. Design: This was a prospective, correlational, and cross-sectional study. Methods: The sample for this study included 209 surgical nurses working in the surgical clinics of a research hospital. Data were collected between March and July 2020 using the Nurses' Descriptive Characteristics form, Evidence-Based Attitude Toward Nursing Scale (EATNS) and the patient-centered care competency of the nurses, Patient-Centered Care Competency Scale (PCCS). Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were conducted to analyze the data. Findings: The mean total EATNS was moderate (53.93 ± 7.18, out of 75), and their approach to patient-centered care behaviors was high (69.46 ± 8.64, out of 85). Conclusions: We found a medium level of positive correlation and a significant relationship between the attitudes toward evidence-based nursing and patient-centered care competencies of the nurses participating in the study (r = 0.507, P < .05). © 2023 American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses

Investigation of pain associated with endotracheal aspiration and affecting factors in an intensive care setting: A prospective observational study
Özsaban, A.; Üzen, Cura; Yılmaz Coşkun, E.; Kibar, D.
Background: Endotracheal aspiration is a painful nociceptive procedure. There is still a gap in the literature on studies to determine the pain level and nursing interventions for aspiration. Objectives: This study evaluated pain during endotracheal aspiration and examined the factors affecting pain. Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted with 105 inpatients meeting the inclusion criteria in the internal intensive care unit of a public hospital. Two hundred ten aspiration procedures were monitored for pain and other variables. ASPMN 2019 Position Statement recommendations were followed in designing the study and determining the procedure. The pain score range obtained from The Critical Care Pain Observation Tool was 0–8. A score of 2 or more is considered to indicate the presence of pain. The primary outcome measures were pain associated with endotracheal aspiration and affecting factors in this study. The generalised linear mixed model established for aspiration procedure-associated pain and affecting factors was analysed. Results: Patients' mean pain score was 1.24 ± 2.05 before, 3.07 ± 2.17 during, and 2.35 ± 1.94 after aspiration and 0.89 ± 1.40 at 15 min after aspiration. The pain rate was 26.1% before, 71% during, and 60.9% after the aspiration procedure and 18.8% after 15 min. There was a statistically significant difference between all pain scores evaluated. The difference in aspiration-related pain scores by age, respiratory diseases, sedation status, aspiration pressure, and tube diameter was statistically significant. Conclusions: The pain score due to aspiration procedure increased significantly in intensive care unit inpatients and is an important risk factor for patient safety. More focus is needed on the causes and measures of aspiration-related pain. © 2022 Australian College of Critical Care Nurses Ltd

School Based Adolescent Health Screening Program Results
Yalçın Irmak, Aylin; Çelikkalp, Ülfiye
Objective: In this study, it was aimed to present the results of the school-based adolescent health screening program conducted within the scope of public health nursing practices. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in three different schools affiliated to the Tekirdağ Provincial Directorate of National Education in the 2019-20 academic year. The research data were collected from 1913 students. Hypertension, height, weight, visual acuity, hearing, tooth decay, scoliosis, head lice and digital game addiction were screened in schools. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 21 package program using number, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Results: The average age of the students is 14,60±2,21, 52,7% of them are male. Health risks identified in students as a result of the screening are as follows: tooth decay in 51,75%, overweight in 23,9%, digital game addiction at 20,49%, scoliosis in 18,98%, decrease in visual acuity in 14,85% right eye, 13,23% left eye,7,42% in both eyes, hypertension at 10,82%, and being underweight at 9,5%. Conclusion: It has been shown that school health nurses can assume important responsibilities and roles at the stages of determining the health risks of children within the scope of school health services, trying to prevent these risks, or providing guidance for early diagnosis and treatment. The widespread use of school health nursing practices will contribute to the improvement of children's health, reducing the burden of health services, increasing the healthy and productive population and the development of the country's economy.
